Fire Safety: It's All About Prevention
Have you ever thought how you would react if your house was catching on fire? If you were trapped by a fire at your workplace? Sadly we only wonder about these circumstances when we are told about a destructive fire in the news, or someone close to us experiences one. However, fire safety is so vital, we all need to pay more attention to it seriously and much more regularly.
In case of fire prevention is the best safety measure one can take. Whether it's how to stop a fire from starting to begin with, how to prevent it from engulfing the surroundings, how to protect yourself and others from major ingiuries in case of a fire or to prevent property from being damaged or destroyed, it definitely is all about prevention.
Fire Prevention
Such simple actions as, for example, not leaving candles burning unattended, performing regular maintenance on electrical appliances, avoiding electrical system overloads and keeping highly flammable materials in a safe place are easy to implement and are critical actions that can be taken toward prevention of fire.
Preventing a Fire from Spreading
Making sure fire detectors are properly installed and functional, making sure fire extinguishers are easily accessible (and knowing where they are located and how to handle them) plus built in sprinkler systems or fire hoses will all make it easier to stop a fire in its early stages, before too much damage or injury is caused.
Preventing Injury or Death
Once a fire has caught, swift action must be taken to put the fire out, however, without doubt the most important thing in an already blazing fire is to ensure everyone's safety. This is really the most basic yet the most vital (literally) aspect of fire safety is saving lives. Learning escape routes, how to keep from inhaling too much smoke and what to do if you catch fire are some of fire safety principles everybody should learn.
Awareness During Fire Safety Week
Fire Prevention Week begins the first Sunday in October and ends the following Saturday. This week is especially dedicated to the education of everyone about fire safety in order to decrease the amount of damage to property and loss of life that is happening every year. It is also a time to recognize and appreciate fire services (called Fire Service Recognition Day).
Fire week was introduced by President Coolidge in 1925 after the Great Chicago Fire. President Coolidge was preoccupied by the too many deaths and great property damage caused by fire every year and believed that most of this was easily preventable. The fire safety week was declared in order to solve or at least lessen this problem.
Although we are all recognize and are extremely grateful to firefighters for risking their lives to save our properties and lives, we must embrace fire safety do our part to prevent deadly fires, injury, loss of life and damage to property whenever and however possible!
