Following Fire Safety Regulations
Sometimes the very requirements that can seem like such a nuisance or waste of time and effort are the things that end up saving our lives. When we comply with the rules, we may never know just exactly what dangers we avoided, but it’s important to remember that you might not have been so lucky had you not complied.
This is certainly true of fire safety regulations. The requirement to review your premises and evaluation every space for fire risk may sound like a tedious task, but there is no question that it is a supremely important one. How often do you hear of a fire breaking out and burning down a building and learn that upon investigation it was discovered that the building was not following the fire code? Unfortunately this is far too common.
The goal of all fire safety regulations is to make a building less prone to the outbreak of fire, thus greatly reducing the risk of loss or damage to the building and any property it contains and of course, especially preventing injury and death of any occupants.
Some of the basic fire safety regulations are those that require fire alarm systems to be in place. These alarms or smoke detectors need to be well maintained and properly placed to give notice of a fire wherever one should break out. There are also regulations on the number of fire extinguishers that need to be placed within the property, where they are located and how they are maintained.
Other regulations deal with the maximum occupancy permitted in a building, electrical wiring, storing of flammable materials and other such fire preventative measures.
New fire safety regulations in the UK have simplified some of the laws that were previously in place. As a matter of fact, the changes implemented in 2006 combine over seventy separate regulations all under the one code. This makes it much easier to keep up to date on your building's level of fire safety.
Another benefit of the new code is that it makes it possible to follow the regulations without having to deal with so many different authorities. As a matter of fact, the responsibility lies much more on the shoulders of the person responsible for the building.
The main thing about the fire safety regulations is that the proprietor is responsible for conducting a fire risk assessment on the building. A checklist is provided and in many cases can be completed without any special help. After this, a plan must be put in place to reduce the risk in every possible area and make the building as fire safe as possible.
In some instances, as in the case of a very large building or buildings, or where the occupancy is very high, it may be necessary for an expert to help determine where the risk lies and how to reduce it.
Although they can sometimes seem to take up time you'd rather spend differently, understanding and following fire safety regulations is absolutely for your own good and can prevent great loss of property, health and even life.
