A Career In Firefighting Makes You An Instant Hero
What is it about a firefighter that demands so much respect and admiration? I think women feel that they are heroic and well built. Children admire them for their bravery and life saving abilities, and especially because they go into burning buildings. And men, well, I'm sure men admire them, too.
Of course firefighting is one of those occupations that is more than just a job, and the noble men and women who do it certainly deserve any praise they get. They also deserve their status as one of the five trusted public service professions. They've earned it all!
Becoming a fireman is no easy job. This is not the kind of career for those lazy people who didn't want to go to college. Oh dear me, no! Choosing to spend your life fighting fire requires a great number of positive qualities that many who go on to finish school and begin successful careers don't possess at all.
The road to a career in firefighting is not an easy one. Although in many instances a high school diploma is education enough, some departments require a college education. And even if you don't have to have a great academic background, testing to work in firefighting requires that you have excellent problems solving, logical thinking and spacial awareness skills. Of course this is all on top of the excellent condition you must be in physically.
Those who do make it into this highly competitive field go through months of intensive training, much of which takes place in the classroom. Studying English, Physics, Math and fire science as they relate to firefighting are the subjects focused on. Of course on top of this you have the stringent physical training you must undergo at the same time.
Firefighter safety is of utmost importance, as the goal is to fight fires and save lives, which can only be done if those doing the fighting are kept safe. This is why during their training to join the fire department safety is one of the top subjects emphasized.
Learning how to use their equipment, make and effective decisions under extreme stress and pressure, understanding how fire works and the best ways to put it out as well as gaining the physical strength necessary to complete all these tasks is enough to make you tired just thinking about it!
Understanding what it takes to work in the field of firefighting as well as what the occupations involves, including rescuing victims of car accidents or those in other dangerous circumstances, really makes you realize just how much these great people do for us. May they continue in safety and strength!
